Now that the cattle 'stuff' is caught up for the spring herd only the heifers need to be bangs'ed sometime in the near future. Thursday we will CIDR the fall cows in prep for AI'ing next weekend. First year with fall cows so we don't know what to expect for conception rates but hopefully they do better than expected. Because of trying to get all of the cattle stuff done we haven't hauled much hay in for our cattle this winter so we are hurrying like crazy to get some in before the weather gets nasty. The weather forecast is looking horrible (snow) for this weekend and rain/snow for tomorrow. We have 13 loads to get from our east fields and they are the hardest to get once the snow flies because the roads are not really roads. The south fields are located on main roads so they can be hauled in at a later date.
Our Monday started out pretty normal with light rain. As we were filling the feeder wagon for the weaned calves our neighbor calls with a 911 emergency that his calves (weaned three days prior - as day as ours) had escaped and were running down the road in every direction. Needless to say we dropped what we were doing to head out and help. After 3 hours and completely soaking wet we had gotten most back in the original feedlot pen and 45 head were corralled about a 1/2 mile from there to 2 miles from there back in with the cows in the working corrals. We left Wes's place to come back home to finish our chores and doctor a calf before we headed back to his working corrals to sort cows from calves and haul them back to the feedlot pen. Luckily all calves are accounted for and he doesn't have to rewean his calves again. What turned out to be a cruddy morning actually turned out to be a pretty nice day. :)
Well today we brought the cows with heifer calves at side home for a pasture we lease about 30 miles from home in preparation for weaning tomorrow. To start off the day we need to round up the cows with steer calves at side so we can sort them for shipment to IA. Once that is done we will need to bring in the other cows with calves that didn't make the cut and cows with heifers and sort them because the vet will be here to preg check in the afternoon! Going to be a very long day tomorrow but glad to have it all done when it's over. :)
